Scope and Sequence

This section groups the learning standards into various units and suggests when during the school year those standards should be taught. Each unit also includes a list of the resources the teacher might use to teach the standard, including the textbook and supplementary materials (print and online).

Curriculum Roadmaps

These roadmaps “unwrap” a particular standard identified as critically important content for that grade. Each roadmap describes the key concepts, big ideas and essential questions related to that standard. These materials are designed to help teachers deepen their understanding of the standards.

Sample Test Items

This section contains sample test items, mainly drawn from the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) and the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). These test questions will help teachers, students and others better understand how the learning standards will be measured. Because DC’s learning standards are based on those from Massachusetts, MCAS test items are especially relevant. The NAEP test, given in only 4th, 8th, and 12th grades, is considered to be the country’s most respected and rigorous test. The federal No Child Left Behind law requires that it be administered every other year in grades 4 and 8.
